Taiwan Aboriginal Art

Derlude Lailay

"Aboriginal art often symbolizes 'power' ; it relies on direct perception and direct emotional response to express its spirit and its life. It therefore tends to be characterized by crude form and bright color. Both simplicity and reality is much closer to nature and to truth than the decorative, reflective art of 'civilized' societies" the celebrated professor Liu Chi-Wei once wrote. Derlude Lailay belongs to Paiwan aboriginal people. He learned wooden sculptures from his father who was a famous sculpturer. His works took a part in many governmental exhibitions in Taiwan and awarded with outstanding honor. Most of his works are purchased by Taiwanese and Japanese collectors. The line of his carving is both concise and orderly. The form of his figure sculptures is short and strong. The subject of his sculpture works usually is about the living of the traditional hunter or farmer. He expresses the dynamic life and tribal philosophy by the alive combination of his figure sculptures. He thinks that sharing, cooperation and self-pride are important concepts of the value in traditional tribe, but these concepts are been losing in present society which most of the people look for money. So he emphasizes he will preserve valuable tribal spirits with his creation and he hopes his creation brings some introspection to people.
